💡 Test Your Electronics Knowledge!
Have you ever connected an LED directly to a power supply? Do you know why an LED needs a current-limiting resistor?
Let's test your knowledge with this simple electronics quiz!
The Quiz
What happens when you connect an LED directly to a 5V power supply without using a resistor?
A. The LED will be brighter.
B. The LED will work normally.
C. The LED may be damaged or burn out.
D. The LED will change colour.
👇 Think carefully before choosing your answer!
Understanding LED Wiring
An LED (Light Emitting Diode) has two leads:
- Anode (+): The positive side, usually the longer lead.
- Cathode (−): The negative side, usually the shorter lead.
For a typical LED circuit:
- Connect the positive supply wire to the LED anode.
- Connect the LED cathode to GND through the circuit.
- Add a suitable current-limiting resistor in series with the LED.
Important: The resistor must be connected in series, not in parallel with the LED.
Why Does an LED Need a Resistor?
An LED requires a controlled amount of current to operate safely.
Without a suitable current-limiting resistor, excessive current may flow through the LED. This can cause overheating and permanently damage the component.
The resistor limits the current and helps protect the LED.
How to Calculate the Resistor Value
Use this formula:
R = (Vsupply − Vf) ÷ I
Where:
- R = Resistance in ohms (Ω)
- Vsupply = Supply voltage
- Vf = LED forward voltage
- I = Desired LED current in amperes (A)
Example:
Suppose you have:
- Supply voltage = 5V
- Red LED forward voltage = 2V
- Desired current = 10mA (0.01A)
Calculation:
R = (5 − 2) ÷ 0.01
R = 300Ω
You can select a standard 330Ω resistor.
Always check the LED datasheet and resistor power rating before building your circuit.
The Correct Answer
Answer: C — The LED may be damaged or burn out.
Remember: Always use a suitable current-limiting resistor when connecting a standard LED to a power supply.
